Plight of Battery Technology
Ideally, batteries should possess the following features:
  Environmentally Friendly
  High Power Density
  High Energy Density
  High Charge Retention
Capability to be recharged hundreds, if not thousands of times
Capability to undergo deep discharge cycles
  Low-cost
In reality, however, no existing battery can meet all of the above criteria. Most batteries are not environmentally friendly, typically using extremely toxic chemicals such as lead or cadmium. Few can be rapidly discharged and recharged at will. And none combine the critical metrics of high power density, high energy density, and low cost.
