Xellerion relies on a patented, non-porous, solid-state, polymer-based, hydroxide-ion conducting membrane to solve the dendrite problem. Based on discoveries made at Xellerion's parent company, eVionyx, this unique membrane effectively stopped dendrite formation while preserving the high power densities and high energy densities inherent to Nickel-Zinc batteries. Best of all, Xellerion's membrane can be easily and cheaply manufactured, giving Xellerion the low-cost advantage.
The Xellerion battery incorporates two key technology advances. A novel membrane addresses two classic issues commonly associated with Ni-Zn batteries: electrode shape change and electrical shorting due to dendrite growth. Due to the membrane's solid-state nature, both problems are now overcome, a critical breakthrough for high reliability and long life. In addition, the composition of the zinc electrodes optimizes the cell for maximum power and energy. This proprietary technology harnesses the energy inherent in a cell based on nickel-zinc.
